Resident Evil 6 Review

Written: October 9th, 2012.

A New Spin on a Classic Franchise

Take Two and Call Me In The Morning

Since Resident Evil 5 introduced co-op gameplay, Resident Evil 6 steps it up a notch by giving you 4 campaigns and 7 characters to choose from. The first 3 campaigns are co-op and the 4th solo campaign of Ada can be unlocked after finishing the Leon, Chris, and Jake campaigns. Depending on your game settings you can join another player's open game or have someone randomly join yours. Split screen or system link options are also available.

The New Formula

Rather than focus on upgrading weapons, pack space and ammo, Resident Evil 6 introduces a new skill point system that allows you to purchase and slot 3 skills simultaneously so you can customize your characters to suit your play style. I thought it adds a nice RPG element to a horror game.

Also new is the ability to move and shoot, which comes in handy...too bad the controls are still the standard clunky Resident Evil controls. Melee combat is a lot more fluid but is limited by your stamina bar.

Time to Get Ill

The story features a lot of character overlap in each campaign which helps tie everything together and a timeline is also available in the cutscene menu if you have a hard time following things. Several reviews I read just didn't seem to get what was going on in my opinion. Each campaign chapter covers a different mission and location so some time does pass in the story from one chapter to the next. Each campaign takes between 10-15 hours to complete solo, so don't be worried about getting a short story with a bunch of multiplayer features.

Other Symptoms

In addition to co-op campaigns, Mercenaries and Agent Hunt offer more replay. Agent Hunt lets you hop in as a zombie/monster and Mercenaries mode lets you team up for your standard survival mode against waves of zombies/monsters.

Verdict

Buy It...if you like Resident Evil games. If you want a more action packed horror game with RPG skill trees, try Dead Island. If you want a pure survival horror game, check out the DayZ mod for ARMA II or the standalone DayZ game when it is released later this year.
